Coloring Page Maker Image Requirements: File Types, Size and Resolution

For this browser-based coloring page maker, choose a JPG, PNG, or WEBP image under 15 MB; keep it at or below 30 megapixels and no more than 6,000 pixels on either side. The photo is processed on your device, and the tool can export a PNG and PDF at 300 DPI.

Accepted photo files and limits

The file picker checks both the filename extension and the browser-reported image type. A file with a supported extension but a mismatched format is rejected. The current tool accepts JPG/JPEG, PNG, and WEBP—not GIF, HEIC, or SVG.

What we checked in the live tool code

On October 3, 2026, we ran browser checks against the site's current tool. A 320 × 240 WEBP fixture was accepted and showed “Photo ready. It stays on this device.” A generated 6,001 × 2 PNG was rejected by the longest-side rule even though it was only a few pixels tall. A 15 MiB + 1 byte JPG-named file was rejected by the file-size rule, and a GIF was rejected with the supported-format message.

We then loaded a small 320 × 240 JPG test drawing and ran the generator. The browser showed “Done. Your photo was processed on this device.” and reported “PNG + PDF · 3508 × 2480 px · 300 DPI · A4” for that landscape input. This is a file-handling and output-spec check, not a claim that a geometric test image predicts how every real photo will look.

How to prepare a photo before converting it

  1. Use a JPG, PNG, or WEBP copy of the photo. If your phone saves HEIC, export a JPG or PNG copy first.
  2. Check the file size and pixel dimensions in your photo app. Resizing a copy can bring an oversized file under the tool's limit.
  3. Keep the main subject fully inside the frame. If the subject is small, crop a copy before uploading; leave enough of the subject's outline visible.
  4. For a clean first test, choose a well-lit image where the subject stands apart from the background. Busy texture may become extra lines; a crop can enlarge the subject but cannot remove every detail that remains in the crop.
  5. Choose A4 or US Letter in the tool, then check whether portrait or landscape orientation suits the photo before saving the PDF or PNG.

For a measured example of how a tighter crop changed the page orientation and retained background detail, see our same-photo crop test. To compare actual input photos with their generated outlines, visit photo-to-coloring-page examples.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use an HEIC photo directly?

No. The current file picker accepts JPG/JPEG, PNG, and WEBP. Make an exported JPG or PNG copy of an HEIC photo first.

Will a file under 15 MB always work?

No. It must also be a readable image in a supported format, have no more than 30 megapixels, and have no side longer than 6,000 pixels.

Does the tool upload my selected photo?

The current tool processes the image in the browser and displays “Photo ready. It stays on this device.” and “Your photo was processed on this device.” The test here observed its local processing flow; it is not a general privacy audit of the whole website or your device.
